Marcus

"Within my work, I explore both surface and implied depth. Utilizing methods steeped in tradition, I manipulate space and form upon the canvas’ two-dimensional surface. I combine these techniques alongside urban inspired media, such as spray paint, which, I acknowledge, as flat, color elements to complement the established depth and form. I am inspired by this duality of both technique and subject, as it parallels my life of tradition and the unconventional. This past year, I have experienced both the loss of my father and becoming a father myself, this is the antithesis that has inspired and fueled my work as of late. Incorporating the use of mandalas, the Sanskrit word meaning, "circle" within the compositions; I utilize their revolving pattern of geometric elements, alongside organic components, such as floral and “graffiti-esque” markings to achieve my conceptual and aesthetic intent."

Marcus Biography

“I think of my work as an everlasting novel, with the first page filled and every other blank, patiently waiting for the viewer to complete the story.” Thus, Marcus, painter and sculptor, explained the importance of the viewer’s interaction with his work and how they play a crucial role in its discovery, as explained to Parkland Life Magazine in March 2005. Marcus was born in 1981, in South Florida, where he spent his early days determined to become the artist he was meant to be. He left the warmth of Florida and continued his artistic endeavors at the Maryland Institute College of Art where his artistic vision solidified. In addition to his time spent in Baltimore, the artist traveled to the Middle East as well as Western and Eastern Europe, predominately honing his skills as many have before him in the South of France. Living in Aix-en-Provence, in the foothills of Cezanne’s picturesque mountain, Marcus followed in the tradition of his predecessors. Because the artist’s inspiration comes from his surroundings and more importantly his dreams and memories, traveling has become an important role in the artist’s conception of new work. In many ways the work can be seen as a living journal. Presently residing in South Florida, the artist has received much acclaim for this new vision in the art world.
